Real Alabama Wedding - Kelly & Brian

I love getting emails from my lovely cafe readers .....and when I received one from Kelly letting me know that she would love to share her and Brian's beautiful wedding with us, well I just couldn't wait to share it with all of you....Kelly & Brian's wedding is simply beautiful...I love all the DIY details and they all had so much fun at the reception.....Kelly and Brian are the cutest couple and I'm so happy to know that Kelly stops by the cafe each day....capturing their wedding story are the INCREDIBLY talented Jesse and Whit of Our Labor of Love....their work is ALWAYS gorgeous and I love their style.....let's check out all the magic Jesse and Whit captured on Kelly & Brian's beautiful day....Enjoy!

From Kelly....."We had a lot of fun with the DIY details of our wedding. Instead of a guest book, we did a wish tree and I designed all the wish cards. I created all the programs and escort cards using matchbooks. We also made the table numbers using wine bottles spray painted black with tuxedo cuff wraps. We customized the wedding playlist and Brian [the groom] designed and built a beautiful art deco backdrop for our wedding ceremony.  We wanted a vintage/Old Hollywood feel but we still wanted a fun, lively party and I think we achieved that!"

Thanks so much Jesse and Whit for sending over all the beautiful images.....guys make certain you head over to Our Labor of Love's blog site to see what they've been up to lately and.....check back later for Part II of Kelly & Brian's beautiful wedding story!!

Real California Wedding: Tricia & Josh

Welcome back to our afternoon feature at the cafe....the beautiful wedding of Tricia & Josh.....their wedding is filled with beauty and elegance and I am so loving the bridesmaids pretty blue dresses!  Their wedding story was captured by the AMAZINGLY talented and oh-so-sweet, Annie McElwain of Annie McElwain Photography......I adore Annie's work and I'm so happy to have her stop by the cafe today...let's check out all the magic of Tricia & Josh's wedding day.....Enjoy!

Lauren of Downey Street Events  shares a little "411" with us....."Tricia and Josh's wedding was all about the blending of cultural traditions and the personality of the couple.  Josh is an avid music fan who has been known to travel around the country to see the same band play two nights in a row!  Tricia also shares Josh's love of music and so the Great American Music Hall seemed a natural pick for their January 16, 2010 wedding.  The Great American Music Hall, built in 1907, is one of San Francisco's oldest and grandest concert venues.  In the past three decades alone the Great American Music Hall has hosted artists ranging from Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan and Count Basie to Van Morrison, the Grateful Dead and Bobby McFerrin.  The Hall's ornate balconies, soaring marble columns and elaborate ceiling frescoes make it an exceptional venue for a wedding.

Prior to the wedding, Tricia and Josh participated in some Chinese traditions which proved to be some of the most moving and unique moments of the day.  First, there were the "groom's games" in which Josh had to "prove" himself to Tricia's bridesmaids by answering a series of questions and passing a series of "tests."   The bridesmaids formed a wall and giggled as Josh hula hooped, spelled out letters with his body and did push ups with a huge smile.  (Of course bribery was allowed if the questions or tasks were too difficult). Tricia was listening to the activity and peeking down from the stairs above.  After the reveal, Tricia and her family planned a traditional tea ceremony at the Palace Hotel.  This intimate ceremony was one of the most touching wedding moments we have experienced.  During the ceremony, Tricia and Josh knelt before each set of parents and other family members and served them tea.  Parents shared marriage advice and congratulated the couple.  Tricia and Josh expressed gratitude for their parents and for each other. The whole ceremony was very intimate and emotional, as you can see from the pictures.

Josh and Tricia's family's cultural traditions were woven throughout the ceremony and reception as well.  Tricia and Josh exchanged vows under a gorgeous custom made chuppah by Under the Chuppah.  And, guests were treated to a special surprise when, late into the evening, traditional lion dancers burst onto the dance floor and performed an incredible dance in costume.

Tricia loved the look of the Great American Hall and wanted her wedding decor to compliment the gorgeous architecture.  Tables were adorned with crystal candelabras that the bride and groom put together themselves, as well as blue hurricanes and tons of red roses.  The stationary incorporated gold filagree that matched the molding on the ceiling of the Great American Music Hall.  The entire room was illuminated with candles which really brought out the warm red and gold colors in the venue."

Tricia is a GORGEOUS bride!

Perfect red rose bouquet...oh so pretty!

These little Divas are too cute!

How pretty are the blue dresses with the red bouquets...perfect!

DIY - Escort Card Box

Hi Guys....I received a few emails asking me about the "Escort Card Box" featured in Lauren & Jon's wedding......it was one of my favorite details of the wedding and it was beautifully designed by the oh-so-fab and incredibly talented Courtney Spencer of Merriment Events and editor of Little White Book.  Courtney's work is always so beautiul and I love to see and hear about all of her wonderful ideas for her gorgeous events.  She took a little time out of her busy schedule to stop by  and share all the info on the "Escort Card Box"....let's get started....Enjoy!!

Materials Needed:

  • a wooden box (Look at antique stores or shops like Three Potato Four. Just make sure the box you use isn't too deep.)
  • green florist's styrofoam
  • a small hand saw
  • needle nose pliers
  • copper wire (you can find it at craft stores like Ben Franklin)
  • tent fold escort cards
  • a wire cutter or a pair of heavy duty scissors to cut the copper
  • reindeer moss
  • spanish moss
  • acorns

Directions:

1. Measure the height, width and depth of the box.

2. Cut the styrofoam to size with a hand saw. (image 1)

3.  Fit the styrofoam in the box (images 2 + 3)

4. Cover styrofoam with reindeer moss. (image 4)

5.  Cut the copper wire into 5" pieces. You will need as many pieces of copper wire as you have escort cards. (images 5 + 6)

6. Grab the end of a piece of copper with your needle nose pliers. Turn pliers in a clockwise motion to form the circular shape that will hold the escort card. (image 7 + 8)

7. Release the pliers from the copper and smooth the outer edge of the copper (which is probably sticking out at this point like in the image. Just clasp either side of the copper with the pliers and push them together to smooth the edge. You can loosen the grip of the wire to make room for your escort card later if you need.)

8. Determine how many rows of card holders you'll need and how many cards will go in each row. Space the holders accordingly. (image 9)

9. Place the escort cards in the holders, being sure that the name is on the outside of the card and that the table number is on the inside. (*Also keep in mind that your cards should stand higher toward the back of the box and rest lower toward the front so every name is visible.) (image 10)

10. Nestle spanish moss and acorns around the box. Display the box in a place where your guests will easily see it during cocktail hour.  (image courtesy of Elizabeth Messina)

Courtney, thanks SO much for stopping by the cafe today and sharing this fun and beautiful DIY with us.....guys, make sure you check out Courtney's site to see what she's up to....xoxo

Check back later guys....we have a beautiful vintage "E-Session" to share with you....you don't want to miss it!!
