Fresh Cut Design with Kim Hirst

I want to introduce you to one of my favorite floral designers....Kim Hirst of Fresh Cut Design.  Kim is AMAZING....her designs are always so beautiful and so fresh.... AND....she is such a sweet heart!  Her work has been featured in numerous wedding publications and she has worked with Karen Bussen and Michelle Rago.  I'll always remember when I first started my floral business, I called Michelle's studio and Kim answered the phone.  She took the time to chat with me and I'll always remember how kind she was to me and so helpful .....and I'm so happy to have her stop by today to share a little "411" with us on one of my favorite subjects...you guessed it...FLOWERS!!

Let's check out what Kim has to share with us and see some of her gorgeous designs....Enjoy!!

The Bride's Cafe:  What inspires you as a designer?

Kim Hirst:  I am inspired by textures, patterns, colors & nature. The flea markets in
Paris have been a huge source of inspiration in my designs. I love working with vintage fabrics, trims and vessels.

The Bride's Cafe:  What is the best part about your job?

Kim Hirst
:  The best part of my job is designing each event uniquely for each client. Listening to a client and designing elements to fit their needs is exciting. I enjoy tying all the elements together from the save the date to the guest gifts and everything in between.

The Bride's Cafe:  What has been the highlight of your career to date?

Kim Hirst
:  I love to travel and through work I have seen places that I might not have in my personal life. Being able to travel through work is an extra perk to an already fantastic career. I have traveled all over the
US, Europe, Asia and to some of the most secluded beaches in the Caribbean.

The Bride's Cafe:  What are the color palettes that you are seeing for 2009?

Kim Hirst:  When I think about color palettes of the season, I always look to interior design and fashion to inspire. I see fuchsia, salmon, lemon, citron, lavender, slat and rose for 2009.

In my opinion, I feel that a wedding without beautiful flowers is just like a blank canvas and some bride’s budgets just can not afford to have the flowers that they dream of having…….what advice would you give to them.

The Bride's Cafe:  What are your favorite color combinations to use for weddings?

Kim Hirst:  I have to admit I’m a bit obsessed with green and I like to incorporate yellow and white in the mix. It depends on the season as well, in spring I like butter yellow, soft greens, white & lavender, in summer brighter colors like orange, lime and bright yellow, in fall burgundy, grass green, yellow & orange and in winter whites, pastel blues and lavenders.

There are other options to add color to a room if you are on a budget….Venues usually include rental linens in their packages, these linens come in a variety of colors. Adding color linens to the tables will give the room life. It doesn’t take a huge amount of flowers to give the table a lush feel. Using different types and heights of candles and small bud vases with single blooms of flowers will make the table feel lush. Create a cluster in the center of the table and maybe a single bloom at each place setting, guests will remember the elements that they interact with.

The Bride's Cafe:  What type of venues are the most fun to design for?

Kim Hirst:  White studio spaces and tents are the most fun to design. They give the most play in terms of color choices and design elements. It’s your blank canvas and you can paint any picture you desire.

The Bride's Cafe:  What are some creative ways to use flowers at a wedding?

Kim Hirst:  I enjoy making statements with flowers, weather it’s a flower and foliage wall or something spectacular at the escort card table. I have designed entire linens out of leaves, transformed petals into napkin rings, made cones out of petals and filled them with flowers; there are so many creative things to do with flowers all you need is your imagination.

The Bride's Cafe:  What should a bride look for when choosing her floral designer?

Kim Hirst:  A bride should feel comfortable with the designer she chooses. It could be up to a year of working together and it is important that she feels like she is in good hands. Check out the designers website first before scheduling a meeting. Although, she may not connect with all the pictures on the site it is important to see the attention to detail in each element. Listen to the advice the designer gives throughout the meeting and make sure he/she is listening to YOU and what you want!

The Bride's Cafe:  Please share some fun details about your home life.  We want to get to know you a little

Kim Hirst:  I live in the suburbs of
New Jersey and love being able to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. I live with my boyfriend, my dog Suki and 2 cats; it’s a pretty busy house to say the least. I love nature and take every opportunity to enjoy it, whether I’m walking the dog or taking a long bike ride, it relaxes and inspires me at the same time.
