Beauty surrounds us, even in the most mundane of settings. Flowers, whether from the finest florist or the corner bodega, are beautiful and wonderful to have around. Their effortless beauty delights your senses, boosts your mood, enhances your décor and easily adds charm to every home, making it that much more inviting. No florist on speeddial? Not to worry, buy flowers from your local grocery store or farmer’s market and become your own florist. Don’t believe us? Enter lifestyle blogger and stationer Kalyn Johnson, of Effie's Paper and floral designer Kathleen Hyppolite, of Kat Flower

Kalyn hosted Kathleen in her beautiful New York loft for a one-on-one flower arranging tutorial and invited

photographer Mel Barlow to document the process and results. The approach: super simple…using seasonal flowers easily found at the grocery store, corner deli or farmer’s market, Kathleen taught Kalyn how to make a simple arrangements using vessels found in her home.

The flowers: Kathleen purchased dahlias, lisianthus, alstromeria, stock, geranium and other blooms from the flower market but all these flowers are readily available at many farmer’s markets, local grocery stores, delis, etc. She chose a bold and colorful palette to complement the clean and neutral tones in Kalyn’s home.

The vessels: Two of the vessels used in the shoot are traditional vases found in Kalyn’s home and the third was simply a bedside carafe. Vessels do not have to be particularly unique or complicated – if it can hold water then most likely, it will make a beautiful vase.

The purpose: Kathleen and Kalyn came together to show that living with beauty is easy and accessible. Flowers are the perfect solution to home accessory woes! A little prep (preparing the water, cleaning and cutting the flowers, {basic} understanding of flower placement) and imagination are the keys to a beautiful arrangement et voilà! Simple flowers and vessels turn into something personal and gorgeously lovely.

Kat and Kalyn, the flowers are GORGEOUS....Kalyn, you did an AWESOME job and Kat you are an AWESOME teacher!!.....guys, make sure you check out Kat Flower for more pretty floral inspiration and then head over to Kalyn's blog spot, Possess Your Style....and a huge thanks to my girl Mel Barlow for all of the beautiful images!!
